Welcome to another edition of Extra Food Chat with Kath.
Thank you for subscribing and supporting my work. I am so happy to have you here and be able to share more with you.
As I explained in my last Extra Food Chat with Kath newsletter, I will be bringing you an heirloom recipe series as part of this paid subscription. If you’d like a refresh on what I spoke about last time regarding heirloom recipes and those from my Grandma’s collection you can click here.
The first recipe I have chosen out of my Grandma’s recipe collection, is Cheese and Chive Scones. A fairly simple recipe, but one that can pack a punch flavour wise. You can see the original recipe below.
While I’m sure my Grandma made scones, I have no memory of her making these ones. I’m not sure where the recipe came from, based on the kind of paper it is written on, I’d guess it was written down slightly later in her life. It might have even been copied down whilst watching a cooking show on TV - it has no specific method only a list of ingredients, an oven temperature and a suggested cooking time.
My Grandma liked watching cooking shows on TV, she particularly liked Maggie Beer’s show ‘The Cook and The Chef’ which my Mum liked too and sometimes they would discuss the recipes together. If the conversation went on too long in this vein, my Grandpa, who for some reason did not like Maggie Beer, or potentially the women led conversation which actually had not gone on that long at all, would interrupt saying he thought the men should suggest something to talk about now. Which unsurprisingly killed the conversation, yet did not promote the beginning of a new one.
