Off The Shelf - The Plain Cake Appreciation Society
Cakes that are Anything but Plain - Friday Food Chat with Kath
I haven’t done an Off the Shelf book review for many months, so it’s time to take a cookbook of my bookshelf and tell you more about it.
My Off The Shelf series was how I started reviewing cookbooks and talking about them on my blog and here in this newsletter. I thought it would be nice to take a cookbook of one of my bookshelves and talk about what I’d made from it and what I thought of it.
I always love hearing what books other people are cooking from, or seeing what cookbooks they have in their collection so I hope you enjoy reading about the books I have in my collection.
The cookbook I am talking about today is my favourite from 2023. Tilly Pamment’s The Plain Cake Appreciation Society has wholeheartedly captured my attention, and those of many others I know. I don’t think I’ve made so many recipes from a new book possibly ever, and I want to make so many more.
Tilly and the team at Murdoch Books have managed to create something that is beyond aesthetically pleasing, doesn’t fall into any transient trends, and feels like a warm hug, a warm cup of tea and a delicious slice of cake all in one.
Click on the link below to read more about my thoughts on this delightful cookbook, and all the recipes I’ve made so far.
Is The Plain Cake Appreciation Society part of your cookbook collection too? What has been your favourite cake from it?
The last paid subscribers newsletter was a recipe for A Caramel Ginger Pudding which came from my Grandma’s collection. Take a look here and sign up to support my work and get it all straight to your inbox or Substack feed!
Caramelised White Chocolate Lamington Slice
A much simpler way to make a lamington is turning the whole thing into a slice, or sheet cake. This recipe uses homemade caramelised white choc, however you can use a bought variety (like Caramilk or Valrhona Dulcey) instead.
